Did you know KISS FM is owned and operated by students at the University of Virginia? Any student at the University is eligible to join the KISS FM staff! There are a wide variety of volunteer positions at the station, and no prior experience is ncessary. This is a great way to try your hand at the broadcasting business in an exciting, yet fun atmosphere. Because KISS FM is a commercial station, the experience you'll get is "real radio" -- just like the "big guys" of the media business.
KISS FM began operations in 1947 as a closed-circuit ("carrier current") AM radio station, broadcasting exclusively to students on the grounds of the University. In 1973 it added cable-delivered FM service (to anyone with an FM receiver hooked to their cable TV), and in 1979 began full-fledged FM operations on 92.7. KISS FM provides "real world" commercial broadcast experience for UVa students, backed by an outstanding staff of radio sales and management professionals. An Alumni Board of former UVa students offers strategic perspective and general guidance.
The station is affiliated with the University's Media Studies program and has a rich tradition of fostering University-community relations.
A 10-minute video overview of this station's role in the evolution of commercial college radio has been captured in a student-produced documentary. You may view the Windows media file by clicking here. [Large (32Mb) download - broadband recommended]
University of Virginia students who are interested in volunteering for a wide variety of postions at the station are encouraged to learn more from this website, and to use our sign-up form if they have an interest in becoming involved with some aspect of the station's operations!
